Antenatal Care

Antenatal care is important for both your health and your baby’s health. When you’re expecting, you’ll welcome a new routine into your life: regular Antenatal visits. There is an air of excitement to these visits. You’ll learn your estimated due date and hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

What happens during Antenatal visits?

What happens during Antenatal visits varies depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Schedule your first Antenatal visit as soon as you think you are pregnant, even if you have confirmed your pregnancy with a home pregnancy test. Early and regular Antenatal visits help your doctor monitor your health and the growth of the fetus.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a condition marked by high blood glucose (sugar) levels during pregnancy. It occurs because the body does not produce enough insulin, a hormone which controls blood sugar level. During pregnancy, the placenta produces a number of hormones, some of which may impair the production and function of insulin.

Any pregnancy complication is concerning but the good news is expectant mothers can help control gestational diabetes by eating healthy foods, exercising and, if necessary, taking medication. Controlling blood sugar can prevent a difficult birth and keep you and your baby healthy.

If you develop gestational diabetes, you may need more-frequent checkups. These are most likely to occur during the last three months of pregnancy where your blood sugar level will be monitored.

Sex Chromosome Aneuploidies

Trisomy X

Triple X syndrome, also called trisomy X, is a genetic disorder that affects about 1 in 1,000 females. Females normally have two X chromosomes in all cells — one X chromosome from each parent. In triple X syndrome, a female has three X chromosomes. Many girls and women with triple X syndrome have no symptoms or only mild symptoms. In other cases, symptoms may be more pronounced — possibly including developmental delays and learning disabilities.

Monosomy X (Turner Syndrome)

A girl inherits one X chromosome from each parent. If a girl has Turner syndrome, one copy of the X chromosome is missing or significantly changed. The missing or altered X chromosome of Turner syndrome causes errors during fetal development and other developmental problems after birth — short stature, ovarian failure and learning disabilities.

Natural Ways of Increasing Fertility You may want to consider tracking your ovulation and menstrual cycles in order to improve your chances of becoming pregnant. With proper recording of body temperature, and careful cervical fluid observation, you can greatly increase the likelihood of becoming pregnant. There are many resources in the form of books and websites that can help you to get started with tracking your body’s natural ovulation cycle. You may also want to consider purchasing ovulation tests online or from your local drug store to keep track of when your days to conceive during the month are. It is best to start checking from about Day 9 of your cycle till you get a positive test. Thereafter having intercourse that night or the next morning and about 36 hours thereafter is desirable.

Although it may seem like the natural thing to do, feeling pressured to have sexual intercourse often and as much as possible can be quite stressful for some couples resulting in sexual issues. Therefore, it is most important to attempt to conceive in the few days prior to ovulation, and then again on the first day of ovulation. Again, this would require diligent observation of your menstrual cycle and ovulation days.

PELVIC ENDOMETRIOSIS

Pelvic Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when the tissue lining the inside of the uterus (the endometrium) becomes implanted outside the uterus, usually on the ovaries or the lining of the pelvis. Growth of this tissue creates surrounding scar tissue and causes variable amounts of pelvic pain, which can be mild to severe and tends to worsen over time if untreated.

adenomyoma-adenomyosis

Adenomyoma/ Adenomyosis

Adenomyoma is a nodule that forms around tissue of the inner uterus (endometrial tissue) as a result of adenomyosis. Adenomyosis is a common condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus. Adenomyosis can cause menstrual cramps, lower abdominal pressure, and bloating before menstrual periods and can result in heavy periods. The condition can be located throughout the entire uterus or localized in one spot.

Many women who have adenomyosis also have endometriosis and these two may contribute to infertility problems.
If you have this condition, you should consider all your treatment options and work with your doctor to identify the best treatment option for you.

Excessive Menstrual Bleeding

The medical term for heavy, prolonged (or both) menstrual periods is menorrhagia. Symptoms of menorrhagia or excessive menstrual bleeding may also include cramping, pelvic pain and, in severe cases, anemia.

Excessive menstrual bleeding is a common condition that occurs for many of reasons. Two of the most common causes are: a hormonal imbalance and uterine growths. Metrorrhagia is the term used to refer to uterine bleeding at irregular intervals, particularly between the expected menstrual periods.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are extremely common. Fibroids are often first found during a routine pelvic exam. To double check, an ultrasound may be performed, either transvaginally or abdominally. A three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can also be used to find the fibroids. If your fibroids aren’t causing you any problems, it is reasonable to consider doing nothing however, its growth must be monitored, especially if symptoms develop such as bleeding or pain, by having exams every six months. If you have uterine fibroids, you should consider all your treatment options and work with your doctor to identify the best treatment option for you.

Ovarian Cysts

Fluid-filled sacs (cysts) often form on the ovaries. There are several different types of ovarian cysts, the most common being functional cysts. Often, ovarian cysts do not cause symptoms. You may not realize you have one until you visit your doctor for a routine exam.

Ovarian cysts can cause problems if they twist, bleed, or rupture.

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy which is removal of the uterus, can cure a variety of problems that afflict the uterus and ovaries, including uterine or cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, heavy non-menstrual bleeding and uterine prolapse. Laparoscopic-robot assisted hysterectomy is one of the most effective, least invasive surgical treatment option that allows your surgeon to perform superior precision and control, with only a few small incisions.

Laparoscopic-robot assisted hysterectomy is a new minimally invasive technology that allows for incredibly precise movements, dexterity and control through minimally-invasive surgical openings and powerful 3D vision/magnification. It is widely being employed for hysterectomy surgery because it allows your surgeon to convert an “open incision” hysterectomy to one that results in only 3 or 4 small 8mm incisions.

Fertility Assessment

Women are born with millions of eggs, however, the number of eggs decreases progressively from birth (1-2 million) to puberty (500,000) and then menopause (1,000). The eggs age at different rates among women regardless of their health status. In general, the quality of a woman’s eggs decreases progressively from puberty.

By age 37, only 25,000 eggs remain and the decline accelerates (40 years – only 1,000 eggs and most of them are poor quality)
Fertilized eggs of poor quality may lead to miscarriages, birth defects and or unhealthy babies
